Jaydon plastic dollhouse furniture is a bit of a "hidden gem" in the world of vintage miniatures, often overshadowed by giants like Renwal or Ideal. Jaydon was a brand name used primarily for complete furniture sets in the early-to-mid post-war era.
Manufacture Era: The Late 1940s to Early 1950s
Jaydon furniture was manufactured primarily during the late 1940s and early 1950s.
It was part of the first wave of "modern" plastic toys that hit the market immediately after World War II. During the war, plastics were diverted for military use; once the war ended, companies like Ardee Plastics, Inc. (the manufacturer behind the Jaydon name) pivoted to making household items and toys.
Key Characteristics:
The Material (Lumarith): Early Jaydon pieces were often made from Lumarith, a type of cellulose acetate plastic developed by the Celanese Plastics Corporation.
Collector’s Note: Unfortunately, Lumarith is prone to "warping" or shrinking over decades if exposed to heat or humidity. If you see a Jaydon chair that looks slightly twisted or "melted" (but isn't), it’s likely the natural aging of this specific plastic.
The "Mahogany" Look: Much of their living room and bedroom furniture was molded in a deep, swirl-patterned brown plastic meant to imitate heavy mahogany wood.
Scale: Most Jaydon furniture was produced in 1:16 scale which made it a direct competitor to Renwal and Ideal. It fits perfectly in the "tin litho" dollhouses of the 1950s.
Condition: All items should be considered in good played-with condition. Jaydon dollhouse furniture is prone to warping and it is unusual to find pieces that are not warped. The Fireplace has a cracked base.
