Reliable of Canada Vintage Dollhouse Furniture, 3/4" Scale, Hard Plastic

Reliable of Canada (The Reliable Toy Company) holds a unique spot in mid-century miniature history, particularly because they were one of the first companies to leverage injection molding for toys using expertise gained from the war effort. While they are often compared to American giants like Ideal and Renwal, they have distinct characteristics that make them a favorite for collectors of Canadiana.

Historical Context & Production
Reliable was founded in Toronto in 1920 and became the largest toy factory in the British Empire by 1935. Their foray into hard plastic miniatures began in the late 1940s and hit its stride in the 1950s. Notably, Reliable entered a licensing agreement with the Ideal Toy Company, allowing them to use many of Ideal's molds. This is why you will often see "twin" pieces between the two brands.

Identification & Marks
If you are sorting through a mixed lot, here is how to spot a Reliable piece:

The Diamond Logo: Most pieces are marked on the underside with a diamond-shaped logo containing the words "Made in Canada, A Reliable Product."

Mold Numbers: You will often see a single digit (e.g., "5") embossed near the logo, which indicates the specific mold or style number.

Plastic Quality: Compared to the thinner, more malleable plastic used by companies like Marx, Reliable pieces tend to be a thicker, harder plastic. While this makes them sturdy, they can be more prone to becoming brittle over decades.

Condition: All items should be considered in good played-with condition. The Bunk Beds are molded in SOFT Plastic.
