Marx Toy Company's Contemporary line (also referred to as the Modern or Mid-Century line) is a distinct 1/2" scale (1:24) series manufactured primarily in the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s. It was designed to furnish Marx’s tin lithograph split-level and ranch-style dollhouses, reflecting the up-to-date suburban aesthetics of the era. Unlike the "Traditional" or "French Provincial" lines, the Contemporary furniture features sleek, angular lines and a noticeable lack of molded "wood grain" or ornate flourishes.
Key Characteristics & Identification
Scale: 1:24 (1/2" scale). These pieces are significantly smaller than the 1:16 (3/4" scale) "Marxie Mansion" or "Little Hostess" lines.
Material: Most pieces were molded in hard polystyrene plastic. However, some late-run versions or specific sets (like the Patio line) were occasionally produced in a slightly more flexible "soft" plastic.
Markings: Most authentic pieces bear the classic "MAR" in a circle over a large "X" on the bottom or back.
Color Palette: Common colors include "Turquoise/Aqua," "Coral/Pink," "Chartreuse," "Wood-tone Brown," and "Cream/White."
Comparison with Other Marx Lines
It is easy to confuse the Contemporary line with its siblings if you aren't looking at the leg styles:
Contemporary vs. Traditional: Traditional furniture uses "Cabriole" (curved) legs or heavy "turned" wood styles. Contemporary uses straight, tapered "peg" legs or pedestal bases.
Contemporary vs. Imagination: The "Imagination" line (1960s) often used a "snap-together" modular design and was generally more blocky and simplified compared to the hard-plastic Contemporary line.
Collector's Note: The "Soft" vs. "Hard" Distinction
Early Contemporary pieces are almost exclusively hard plastic, which holds detail better but is prone to "age-crazing" or snapping at the legs. Later versions, often sold in "bagged" sets or with cheaper cardboard houses, transitioned to soft plastic (polyethylene), which is more durable for play but often suffers from "warping" over decades of storage.
Condition: All items should be considered in good played-with condition.
