The Snap-Fit Imagination line (often simply called the Imagination or Ultra-Contemporary line) is one of the most distinctive chapters in Marx’s dollhouse history. Released in the mid-to-late 1960s (roughly 1966–1968), it moved away from the traditional lithographed steel "Colonial" houses and embraced a modular, pop-art aesthetic.
Key Features of the Imagination Line
The Modular Concept: Unlike earlier lines where furniture was a single molded piece, the Imagination line was designed to be "snap-fit." This meant children could swap legs between different chairs or attach table tops to different bases, allowing for a level of customization that was revolutionary at the time.
Scale: This line was produced in 1/2" scale (1:24), making it smaller than the "Little Hostess" line (1:16) but perfectly scaled for the modular, translucent plastic "Imagination House."
Materials & Colors: The furniture was molded in hard, vibrant plastic. Common colors included bright orange, avocado green, lemon yellow, and white. Some pieces featured the "tulip" base style popular in mid-century modern design.
Collectors' Identification Tips
The Logo: Look for the classic "MAR" in a circle over an "X" on the underside of the pieces.
The "Holes": You can identify Snap-Fit pieces by the small circular "sockets" on the undersides where the legs or bases click in. Because these parts were interchangeable, many loose vintage pieces are found missing their original legs.
The Figures: The line was often paired with a specific 1960s "Imagination Family"—a 4-piece set of soft plastic (polyethylene) figures including a father, mother, and two children in contemporary 60s attire.
Condition: All items should be considered in good played-with condition.
