Louis Marx and Company’s Little Hostess line is a cornerstone of mid-century dollhouse collecting. While Marx produced various furniture lines from the 1920s through the 1970s, the "Little Hostess" brand is most famously associated with the high-quality plastic sets released starting in the 1960s (specifically around 1964).
These pieces were designed to be more detailed than previous plastic iterations, bridging the gap between toy playsets and collector-grade miniatures.
1. Key Characteristics & Scale
Scale: Most Little Hostess furniture is 1/2" scale (1:24), which was the standard for the popular Marx lithographed tin "Colonial" and "Split-Level" dollhouses of that era.
Material: Made from hard plastic (polystyrene). Unlike the simpler, solid-molded plastic of the 1950s, Little Hostess pieces often featured multi-part construction and "moving parts."
Markings: Most authentic pieces are marked with the classic Marx logo: a circle with an "X" and the letters "MAR" inside.
2. Design & "Modern" Features
The Little Hostess line was marketed for its realism. During the 1960s, this meant capturing the transition from Mid-Century Modern to the more colorful, "mod" aesthetics of the late 60s.
Functional Parts: This line was famous for opening drawers and cabinets. The kitchen appliances (stoves and refrigerators) featured interior shelves, and the washing machines often had agitators that could be turned.
Color Palettes: While classic brown "wood grain" was common for living rooms, the kitchen and bathroom sets came in iconic 60s colors:
Olive Green & Harvest Gold (reflecting real-world appliance trends).
Turquoise/Aqua & Ivory.
Bright Yellow & White.
Textural Details: The furniture often featured molded-in details like "upholstery" patterns on sofas or "wicker" textures on patio sets.
3. Notable Room Sets
The Kitchen: Often considered the "holy grail" for collectors due to the detail. Includes a high-back hutch, a "built-in" style oven/range, a refrigerator with a top-mounted freezer, and a gate-leg table.
The Bedroom: Featured a signature canopy bed with a plastic molded coverlet and pillow, along with a matching vanity and "step-side" nightstands.
The Living Room: Included "Tuxedo" style couches, wingback chairs, and the famous tilt-top "Wagon Train" table.
The Bathroom: Typically found in aqua or pink, featuring a footed tub and a vanity with a molded-in sink.
Condition: All items should be considered in good played-with condition.
