Acme/Thomas Toys dollhouse furniture refers to a highly collectible line of hard plastic miniatures manufactured in the United States between 1947 and 1956. These toys were produced by the Thomas Toy Manufacturing Corporation and often marked with "Thomas" or "Acme," representing a marketing partnership with Islyn Thomas.
History and Identification:
The Acme/Thomas Connection: Thomas Manufacturing produced the items, while ACME acted as the marketing company until 1949, when Dr. Thomas bought out his partner, Benjamin Shapiro. Despite this, Acme branding remained on many molds.
Identifying Marks: Items are usually marked with the ACME or Thomas name and a 4-digit mold number, frequently starting with "I-" (e.g., I-167 for the baby hammock).
Time Period: The pieces were primarily manufactured between 1947 and 1956.
Packaging: Starting in 1950, pieces were often sold individually or in sets stapled onto cards to prevent shoplifting in dime stores.
Characteristics of Acme/Thomas Toys:
Material: The furniture is made of molded hard plastic.
Scale: Primarily 1/16th to 3/4" scale.
Distinctive Features: The line is known for specific, repeated elements, including a "horsehead" motif (found on strollers and rockers), triangular supports for swing sets, and "Tommy Tots" baby figures.
Color Schemes: Commonly found in bright combinations, such as red/blue, yellow/red, or pink/blue, particularly for nursery items.
Condition: All items should be considered in good played-with condition.
